Medicinal Mushroom Products for optimal pet health and immunity
It is not surprising that our furry companions suffer the same ailments as their human counterparts particularly as they age. The major health concerns for both dogs and cats can be broadly outlined in the table below:
| Major Ailments afflicting Family Pets | |
| Dogs | Cats |
| Obesity | Kidney failure |
| Skin allergies | Cardiomyopathy |
| Cancer | Feline leukemia |
| Arthritis | Feline AIDS |
| Dental Disease | Diabetes |
| Gastrointestinal inflammation | Hepatic failure / lipidosis |
| Congestive heart failure | Lymphosarcomas |
| Chronic Kidney disease | Allegic dermatitis |
| Diabetes | Digestive – colitis, gastritis, inflammatory bowel |
| Viral Diseases - various | Obesity |
Many of the ailments listed above are either directly or indirectly immune system associated,
so a healthy immune system is paramount to vigorous pet health and longetivity! For example, many
of the increasingly common skin allergies or contact dermatitis syndromes are associated with dietary
additives or environmental exposure. Often the culprits are difficult to identify and equally difficult
to treat. Proper immune modulation may help to control recurrent bouts of skin inflammation, itching and flaking.
More directly associated with immune responses, or lack thereof, are the various tumours that occur in dogs and cats.
This is an arena that we are well versed having battled canine cancer in our own beloved pets! A vigilant immune
system is paramount for preventing tumour occurrence and battling cancer once it has been diagnosed.
The other prominent issue that is rampant in our animals is the syndrome of obesity! Obesity in of itself can
augment or hasten a multitude of other diseases, notably diabetes, cardiac affliction, and progressive joint disease!
In addition to a healthy pet lifestyle and diet, supplementation with dietary additives which boost and modulate
immunity, aid in weight reduction and mitigate inflammation by powerful endogenous antioxidants can dramatically
improve the duration and quality of life of our pets!
Medicinal mushrooms and the associated mycelium have been used in Asian medicine for thousands of years
and their extraordinary effects have been reported in the medical literature since 1968 (Ikekawa et al., 1968;
Shibata et al., 1968)! These early papers were seminal in establishing the basic criteria by which a multitude
of wild and cultivated medicinal mushrooms were evaluated. They established that the active fraction was
extractable by hot water and was predominantly composed of large molecules – which we now know are fungal
polysaccharides (please refer to the beta-glucan discussion on the website). The results for some mushrooms were
astounding with dramatic and complete tumor regression and upwards of 98.6% tumor inhibition!
A summary of representative publications in the peer reviewed medical literature detailing the beneficial
effects of various medicinal mushrooms has been compiled and is presented in the table below. The notable
factor when deciding to implement medicinal mushroom products into your pet’s life is the extremely low risk
of side effects and toxicity. In fact, a review by scientific writer and noted author, Kenneth Jones indicated
that even at extremely high dosages no observable toxic effects were seen in dogs or rabbits (Jones, 1988).
Our products are exclusively produced by us! We strictly abide by sustainable principals and only produce
