Medicinal Mushrooms for Pet Metabolic Augmentation and Weight Management
Myco Essentials' K-9 Slender is a mix of medicinal mushroom
mycelia that can dramatically improve your pets' aerobic metabolism, modulate the effectiveness of stored
fat utilization and activate lipid mobilization. It also provides powerful NATURAL antioxidants and enhances pet
muscle leanness and endurance assisting in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.
K-9 Slender is an unique, specially formulated, mycelial
mix that does NOT contain any fillers, additives, colorants, synthetic ingredients, or
non-human grade (food grade)components. Our products utilize 100% organic Canadian rye
to culture the medicinal mushroom mycelia and the product is exclusively produced in Canada.
The key medicinal mushroom mycelia blended in the K-9 Slender include:
- Reishi (Ling Zhi Mushroom, Ganoderma lucidum, 靈芝),
- Maitake (Hen of the Woods Mushroom, Grifola frondosa, 舞茸)
The mycelia of both medicinal mushroom contains powerful diverse antioxidants (Saltarelli et al., 2009; Sun et al., 2004; Wang et al., 1985; Wong et al., 2004; Wu et al., 2009; Zhu et al., 1999; Kim et al., 2008) which protect your Pets working muscles from oxidative damage thereby aiding in faster recovery, growth and strength!

Maitake (Hen of the Woods, 舞茸), revered for its immunomodulation, anti-arteriosclerotic (Mori et al., 2008) and anti-diabetic (Hong et al., 2007) properties, has been shown to mobilize stored fat (lipids) from brown fat (adipose) cells within the body (Minamino et al., 2008a; Minamino et al., 2008b; Nakai et al., 1999; Kubo and Nanba, 1997). Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) has been shown to be important for body weight regulation and is metabolically reduced in overweight mammals (Van Marken Lichtenbelt et al., 2009;). Synergism can be further augmented by coupling the lipid mobilization effect of Maitake with improved aerobic metabolism and the inhibition of lipid deposition conferred by Reishi (see below).
In addition to conferring increased fat utilization, Maitake has been shown to improve exercise capacity while decreasing levels of plasma triglycerides and lactate (Jung et al., 2004).
Reishi (Ling Zhi, 靈芝), has been used for millennia for its health promoting qualities and is revered in Asian literature for it life extension attributes, often referred to as herb of longetivity. Many ancient texts explicitly recommend this once rare and often sought after mushroom for improving oxygen utilization during vigorous expeditions into mountainous regions with low oxygen levels. Modern science has indeed borne this out by demonstrating that Reishi significantly improves aerobic energy metabolism (Sudheesh et al., 2009; Ajith, et al., 2009) thereby allowing mitochondria (the cellular energy generating centers) to function with higher efficiency! Mitochondrial dysfunction, or reduced capacity has been an intensely investigated area for weight reduction (De Pauw et al., 2009). Improved mitochondrial function translates to the increased lipid fuel utilization, significantly improved aerobic capacity, decreased free radical production and the concomitant decrease in the production of lactic acid! In addition, several triterpenoids (small cyclic molecules) present in Reishi have been shown to act similar to Maitake, inhibiting lipid deposition into fat cells and can modulate energy homeostasis (Lee et al., 2009; Lee et al., 2010).
Metabolic Augmentation for Weight Loss - The Scientific Literature
Introduction
The key to effective and persistent weight loss lies in a very simple premise – calorie management (Clarke and Henry, 2010). This is often confused with the overly simplistic notion that in order to lose weight, one needs to consume fewer calories. Although true, calorie management is a realistically more complex process in which the intake of calories is diverted to utilization (burning) rather than storage as fat! Also important are the sites of fat storage (Cypess and Kahn. 2010). The major players in weight gain and weight maintenance are the adipocytes, the fat storage cells, or more appropriate complex fat storage tissue (De Pauw et al., 2009). Generally, mammals have evolved to be calorie wise in a sense, to defend our energy stores and augment them whenever possible (Seale and Lazar, 2009) ....Read More ...
Extensive studies have indicated that the medicinal mushroom functional foods, alternatively termed naturaceuticals, have been associated with many human and canines health benefits without notable side effects. These medicinal mushrooms can also enhance and support the activity of metabolic augmentation for weight loss.
